Review
The complier and translator of this exquisite Qurʾān anthology, Shawkat M. Toorawa, who is professor of Arabic and comparative literature at Yale University, is also an acclaimed scholar of Islamic studies . His mastery of these disciplines— Arabic, translation and Qurʾānic studies, is reflected at its sharpest in the present work. Astutely enough, he has selected a wide range of Qurʾānic verses which encapsulate the main articles of Islamic faith, particularly Allah-Man relationship and devotional worship . Included in this selection are Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, the shorter sūrahs, Āyat al-Kursī (al-Baqarah 2:255), al-Raḥmān, several verses dealing with Allah’s Being and Attributes and some verses of supplication.
