Aliyah Umm Raiyaan’s Ramadan Reflections is a thoughtfully structured work that guides readers on a spiritual and introspective journey during the blessed month of Ramadan. The book is divided into three sections, each corresponding to ten days of Ramadan, and collectively designed to move one from reflecting on one’s past, to engaging meaningfully with the present, and finally, to envisioning a future oriented toward the Hereafter (ākhirah). This tripartite structure reflects a deliberate approach, encouraging gradual transformation rather than abrupt change, which resonates with the incremental nature of spiritual growth.
The first section, “Healing and Taking Lessons from the Past”, initiates the reader into the process of reflection. It begins with the theme of ‘reflection’ and incorporates discussions on gratitude and divine decree (qadar). These topics are foundational for any spiritual journey, as they invite one to reconcile with one’s past experiences, acknowledge divine wisdom, and cultivate a sense of thankfulness. The second section, “Journeying to Allah with Presence”, shifts the focus to the present moment. It opens with the concept of presence and includes themes such as spiritual excellence (iḥsān) and conducting a ‘life audit.’
