Review

This compilation of miscellaneous articles on Islamic civilisation in Southern Africa is published by the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) in Istanbul, Turkey, under the auspices of the Organisation of Islamic Conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The 26 articles were originally presented in a Symposium held at Johannesburg, South Africa, from 1–3 September, 2006. This was the third symposium of its kind after those of Dakar 1996 and Kampala, 2003, devoted to the study of Islamic civilisation in West Africa and Eastern Africa respectively. Dr. Halit Eren, the Director-General of IRCICA, says, that the third symposium in Johannesburg (2006) aimed to increase knowledge of ‘the history and heritage of Islam in the region; making the religious and cultural heritage of Southern African Muslims better understood by themselves and other communities; promoting dialogue amongst Muslim peoples and with peoples of other faiths and cultures, and help to build a good understanding of Muslim cultures around the world’.
