Review
The book under review is divided into seven sections, which narrate the miraculous story that culminates in the anticipated return of ʿĪsā ibn Maryam (peace be upon him). Hanifa Rahman frames this narrative as an unfolding divine plan, deeply rooted in the Qurʾānic discourse.
The opening section introduces Hannah’s prayer, geographically locating her in the sacred precincts of the holy lands and Bayt al-Maqdis. The portrayal of Hannah as a pious, noble and devoted woman to Allah is commendable, reflecting classical Islamic sources and the need for moral and spiritual development. Despite being childless, her contentment is sensitively communicated, another message for those in her situation. The emphasis on her purity – untouched by Satan – highlights her closeness to Allah and elevated spiritual status. In line with Islamic doctrine, the birth of Maryam (peace be upon her) is depicted with holiness; she features as virtuous, inquisitive and intelligent, echoing the ḥadīth that identifies her as the best among women, even though this is not explicitly mentioned. Hanifa’s characterisation of Maryam as hardworking, undistracted and receiving divine sustenance strengthens beliefs of Allah as Creator and Sustainer.
