The Qur’an is a precious gift and bounty which the Most Compassionate One has bestowed on mankind. It is His Mercy and Benevolence that He created man, taught him speech and provided him with a Book of Guidance. His messengers and prophets came in succession since the creation of the very first human being, the Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) and his wife, bringing God’s Guidance. The Scriptures sent before were aimed at particular nations and for a specific period. When humanity reached maturity and inhabited the entire earth there was a need of a complete code of life containing such guidance which remains valid for all times and nations. Thus the ultimate Book of Guidance, the Qur’an, was revealed. For the final revelation, God chose the Arabic language to convey the message clearly and precisely. It is the miracle of the Qur’an that the Arabic language even after fifteen centuries remains unchanged and accessible to all those who speak Arabic. The Muslim Ummah was charged with the responsibility of conveying God’s message to the rest of mankind as no more prophets will be sent to convey the guidance. The Qur’an repeatedly reminds the Ummah to convey the message by being a witness unto mankind as the Messenger had been a witness unto them (al-Baqarah 2: 143 and al-Hajj 22: 78). Thus over the centuries the Qur’an had been translated in most languages of the world. The first English translation of the Qur’an was published in 1649 by Alexander Ross and until the 1920s most translations were done by Orientalists who had their own personal biases. So far there are around seventy translations of the Qur’an in the English language.
