Review

Death and bereavement can be difficult topics to address, but to write a book for children on this delicate subject-matter is an admirable project which the author Zamir Hussein accomplishes in a sensitive and respectful way. We Will Meet Again in Jannah: What a Great Day That Will Be is an activity book that aims to guide children and their families through the loss of a sibling. Each page is especially formulated to address young people at their level; the font chosen for the book gives the impression that the text is written by another small child and the author manages to be neither patronising nor dictatorial on how the bereaved should feel. Instead his book serves as a guide through each stage of sorrow and how the reader might benefit from simple activities, helping them to work through their emotions. Crucially, Hussein refrains from asking children to repress the sadness which is only natural when someone dear to them has passed away; instead the writer acknowledges and values the natural feelings of bereavement and lets the bereaved know that their emotions are to be expected, from wanting to cry, to feelings of guilt, anger, loneliness and confusion.
