In this valuable addition to Quranic Studies, Suha Taji-Farouki’s present volume affords readers an excellent opportunity to learn about some contours of the current Qur’anic scholarship. The range of coverage is comprehensive in terms of both gender and geographical spread. Amid several contemporary Qur’an scholars critically studied in this volume, there is focus on two female Qur’an scholars – Nusrat Amin Khanam (d. 1983) of Iran and [A’ishah [Abd al-Rahman (d. 1998) of Egypt. Equally gratifying is that Qur’an scholars from diverse and even little-known regions and communities have received attention in this volume such as Bosnia and East Africa, and Germany and China. Far from being banal bio-bibliographical sketches, the eleven articles in the volume delve deep into the corpus, hallmarks and contributions of the scholars under study. Throughout, the main concern of the contributors is to bring into sharper light how these scholars have enhanced, in their own varied ways, Qur’anic scholarship, and more importantly, how they have related the meaning and message of the Qur’an to the present times.
