‘Verily, in remembrance of Allah, do hearts find rest’ Surah al-Ra[d (13:28). This is the first complete Arabic-English edition of the full Diwan [collection of litanies and Sufi poems] of Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib al-Amghari al-Idrisi alHasani (d. 1972) (may Allah be pleased with him), which has long been famous among the people of tasawwuf for its balance between litanies and poetry and its expression of spiritual experience and offering instruction on travelling the Sufi path. For Sufism is not experienced through books but through dhawq (tasting - direct involvement), just as the delights of honey can be described but must be tasted to realise its delicacy and sweetness. Such benefits of pursuing this path are detailed in the guided introduction. The preface is provided by Shaykh Muhammad al-Murtada al-Boumas-Houli whose input includes a collection of his own composition of qasa’id or Sufi odes. Other notable contributions are provided, which include qasa’id from the Diwans of Shaykh al-Fayturi. Shaykh Murtada directs a Darqawi-Shadili tariqah from his home at the zawiyah of ibn Malik, set amidst the stunning landscape of the Valley of the Roses, in the oasis town of Kalaat M’Gouna, Morocco. Here, the adhan floats hauntingly across the fields and desert sands....
