The Qur’an, essentially a Book of Divine guidance, has attracted the attention of intellectuals and scholars in different ways throughout Islamic intellectual history. The Qur’an exegetes have approached the Qur’anic text according to
their own epistemological and hermeneutical approaches. This has resulted in the emergence of diverse trends and schools of Qur’anic exegesis – the literalist school, the rationalist school, the philosophical school, the esoteric school, the scientific school, etc. The book under review is based on the study of a scientific exegesis of the Qur’an, al-Jawahir fi Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim, by Tantawi Jawhari – a twentieth century Egyptian scholar.
