Review
The aim of this book is to support school professionals by providing a practical guide to some key issues that may impact the lives and education of Muslim students in US public schools. It gives a concise description of some of the most relevant aspects of the religiosity of Muslim learners, and provides accurate background on basic Islamic beliefs and practices, food, clothing and relationships. The three authors themselves experienced being the ‘Other’ or dealt with Muslim families and youth which reflect some of their critical insights on practice. Accessibly written, the book also creatively explores ways in which religious beliefs and practices may impact on Muslim students’ experiences in US schools. While all the examples are given within a US educational context, they also resonate with the educational needs of Muslims within British mainstream schools. The authors further explore ways in which areas of identity formation within school environment intersect with the prevalent discourses about the Muslim ‘Other’ in the US socio-political context beyond the school space.
