Review

The book under review presents articles about Sufi and Salafi history, activism and thought in the contemporary world. Given the loosely defined nature of the collection, it is best consulted if individual chapters are relevant to one’s work, and this review will endeavour to catalogue these chapters to aid potential readers. The work begins with a short but useful introduction to the terms ‘Sufi’ and ‘Salafi’ by the editor, and a very brief overview of the contents of the volume’s chapters. One wishes that the editor had a stronger influence upon the quality and clarity of some chapters, whose expression is often deficient. Moreover, spelling, translation, editorial and typesetting errors are so abundant that they bear very negatively on the quality of presentation. This is a real shame coming from a reputable publisher like Bloomsbury and a qualified editor like Dr. Ridgeon.
