In this book Afshan Khan focusses on navigating the all-important relationship with in-laws. The Secrets to Surviving In-Laws has seven chapters. In “The Early Days” Khan suggests avoiding problems by addressing them before they germinate. Often, it is the case that considerable energy and time is invested in planning and preparing the forthcoming exciting wedding, but less time is devoted to thinking about what happens afterwards. This chapter highlights preparations that must be made beyond the wedding day and logistical matters after two families have joined together. In addition to having a sincere intention and other practical matters, Khan sensitively navigates the complex role of culture which dictates how things are done in some households. She argues for religion to become the overriding framework to reduce the clash of cultures which often give rise to a turbulent married life.
