Review

Scientific and political freedom in Islam is a broad area that covers a variety of issues related to the concept of the freedom of will. The book moves around two issues: first how Muslim scholars responded to the theory of evolution; and second the viability of a revelation-based democratic order, within a Muslim majority context. The author confines his study to a review of the ideas of mainly Middle Eastern scholars from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The study is based on scholars mainly from Egypt and Tunisia though passing references are made of a few individuals from outside the Middle East.
