To the author, a fundamental role of 21st century Christianity in America is the provision of a progressive, radical counter-culture that challenges the growing levels of inequality and injustice eroding American society. Jason Storbakken particularly targets the atrophied church and its diminishing congregations. His solutions lie in seeking alternatives to this malaise by re-invoking original Christian messages delivered by God through Jesus. By returning to biblical scriptures he offers an understanding of how Christians can actively witness their faith and implement it within their lives. He condemns the cold-hearted, contemptuous, institutionalised attitudes of many nominally Christian Americans towards the poor and marginalised in society, and admonishes a church which reflects and undulates with the current tides of opinion and popular trends in behaviour: compromising its integrity and authenticity in the process. The text is an unusual combination of autobiography, scriptural exegesis, political analysis and religious blueprint, aimed at generating a profound awakening, stirring Christians from a dormant stupor to re-evaluate the purpose of their earthly lives. Putting faith into action, Storbakken, in partnership with his remarkable wife, founded a strong close-knit Mennonite Christian community, ‘Radical Living’, in a challenging district of New York.
