The author, presently the Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious Mawlana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, is one of very few scholars who hold the distinction of having grasped well the nexus between the Qur’an and science. He is not one of those naïve Muslim writers who, notwithstanding the piety of their intention, seek to secure the endorsement of modern science for the Qur’anic account of the universe. The Qur’an is not some scientific treatise; it is basically a book of guidance par excellence, instructing man of all times and climes how to lead a purposeful life. The most gratifying feature of the book under review is that the author succeeds enviably in relating the message and spirit of science to the eternal guidance embodied in the Qur’an. More importantly, this book is a clarion call for present day Muslims to arise and awake lest they be relegated to a marginal entity in today’s knowledge-driven world. He recounts effectively and energetically the Qur’anic call for reflection on Allah’s creative wonders, for making optimal yet prudent use of natural resources which Allah has placed at man’s disposal, and for exploring and harnessing the forces and laws of nature. His sincere advice to the Muslim community to learn a variety of moral and life-giving lessons from the divine signs in and around them is both inspiring and profound....
