In the aftermath of the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that events on that day “did not happen in a vacuum.” Many a casual observer looking in from the outside has assumed that the Palestine-Israel conflict began on October 7, 2023, completely unaware that the present struggle between the Israelis and Palestinians has its roots going back more than a century.

Ghada Karmi’s book under review is a timely piece of scholarship in that it affords a wide range of public opinion a critical and detailed snapshot of the main pressing issues that have affected the lives of millions of Israelis, Palestinians, Jews, Christians and Muslims in the holy land from the late 19th century to the present day.
