Review

I commend this book not just because it is original and fresh and provides a timeless framework for the qualities that all good leaders need in public life. By choosing the Prophet Muhammad as the ideal role model whose life illustrates he had all the leadership qualities necessary to change the world, it is tempting to assume that this book will appeal primarily to the world’s many followers of the Prophet and adherents of Islam. That is understandable and so it should, but that would confine this book to the sections of our book shops and libraries which specialise in books on ‘Religion’ or ‘Islam’ or both. This would be a pity since it should really be in the section on ‘Politics’ or ‘Leadership’ or even ‘How to Change the World’. As John Adair, the world’s first Professor in Leadership says in his Foreword, ‘these are the qualities of leadership that the world cries out for today’. When I first check out any book, I usually follow a particular pattern: first read the Dedications (who the writer owes most to and loves) and then the Acknowledgements (who the writer owes most to and loves as well) and then I read the last page, to see how the writer signs off with a call for more research/ more reading/quiet study or the most important change agent there is which is called ACTION (something positive that the reader can do).
