Over the years the leading Muslim think-tank and NGO, the Institute of Objective Studies (IOS), has made a mark in India. Minorities Studies, Muslim Education and the empowerment of Indian Muslims have been at the core of the numerous publications and conferences of the IOS. The publication under review represents the proceedings of its conference on the theme which constitutes the title of this work. However, it goes far beyond a routine conference proceeding. Prefaced to the work are engaging discussions on these buzz words of our time: “knowledge”, “hegemony”, “democracy”, “nations” and “globalisation”. In his thought-provoking Prologue (pp. 8–15), Mohd Manzoor Alam, Chairman of IOS, aptly accords the pride of place to faith in deliberations on contemporary issues. Alive to the pivotal role of media in our time, he earnestly urges young Muslims to take up journalism as their profession with a sense of mission. Poverty, inequality, injustice and the plight of the marginalised are some of the issues which have been examined perceptively in this work.
