Driven by their earnest desire to enable non-Arabs to grasp the meaning and message of the Qur’an, Muslim translators of the Qur’an have used various strategies down the ages. One of these has been the production of literal translations of the Qur’an. There are two main concerns behind this exercise: a) to remain as close as possible to the original Qur’anic text, ruling out any room for the interpolation of any extra-Qur’anic material, and b) to help readers gain acquaintance with the Qur’anic/Arabic vocabulary. In 1980s, Jamal-un-Nisa bint Rafai took the lead in bringing out her literal, word by word English translation of the Qur’an: The Quran: Translation and Study (London, 1984). Now several such literal translations are accessible online (see: corpus.quran.com; Islamic studies info/quran; alhudapk.com; allahsquran. com/learn and quraninenglish.com).
