This edited volume contains eleven different contributions offering new perspectives on the emerging research about Kazakhstan. Rich in oil and gas reserves, Kazakhstan alone produces about two-thirds of the gross domestic product of all Central Asia and, in terms of GDP per inhabitant, is not far behind Russia. The volume proposes new interpretative frameworks on three main issues: the state, the nation and society aiming to explain how in Kazakhstan these are perceived at home and abroad. This is addressed in three sections: (1) The state and its approaches to assert its authority, frame its agendas and pursue its self-defined outcomes; (2) The modes of interface between the nation and society; and (3) how society is evolving amidst local, regional and global reconfigurations.
