In the interfaith book The Crescent and the Cross: Muslim and Christian Approaches to War and Peace, published in 1998 but apparently not mentioned in the book under review (no bibliography provided), it was suggested that ‘early European writers on international law – especially those, such as Vitoria, Gentili and others, from the Spanish or Italian schools – can hardly have avoided a degree of familiarity with Islamic jurisprudence.’ The book under review sets out to answer two questions: (1) What historical information exists... that these traditions influenced the other and (2) Is there any evidence of influence through their mutual interaction? (p. 3) It provides a wealth of historical evidence from many countries, interspersed with theoretical and legal discussions on the permissibility of wars and the ways in which they can be waged (in Christian terms: jus ad bellum and jus in bellum).In addition it includes two chapters on the Jewish law of war.
