Hurayrah the Cat; The Snake Catcher by Farah Morley is a well-illustrated record of the misadventures of a tabby cat called “Hurayrah” which in Arabic literally means “kitten”. The word “Hurayrah” is sacrosanct to some because of its connection with Abu Hurayrah, the famous Companion (r.a) and the leading transmitter of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He reported over 5000Ahadith over the course of his lifetime, thanks to his photographic memory. The story revolves around a day in the life of the cat, Hurayrah, who lives in Madinah at the time of the Prophet (pbuh). It is written in first person from Hurayrah’s perspective, allowing children to fully engage with the story and for some, even view Hurayrah as a friend.
