Review

The author, who is an assistant professor in the Media and Cultural Studies Department of California University (and also a filmmaker), holds a master’s degree from Syracuse University and a PhD from the University of Ohio. According to her self-description she now ‘teaches courses analyzing intersections of media and popular culture within neoliberal globalized contexts, and with a strong focus on political economy of media’ (p. 218). This corresponds to her being driven by the ‘urge to speak and to make a difference’ (Acknowledgments). For good, critical reasons, the book cover shows two fully-clad Muslim women photographing one another; her own photograph, however, shows her with flattering long hair, freely displayed. The book is mostly written with unusually long, involved sentences, frequently covering up to 13 lines.
