The pivotal position occupied by the Qur’an and the Sirah (the illustrious life of the Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him) is taken for granted and uncontested by all Muslims. Numerous books and articles in different world languages have appeared exploring various aspects of these two primary sources of the religion of Islam. Since the early twentieth century, when English started to gain general currency in the Muslim world, particularly in the former British colonies, and the presence of Muslims in the West began to be felt, along with the conversion to Islam of many native westerners, the corpus of writings on Islam in English has witnessed a phenomenal growth. Apart from more than thirty new English translations of the Qur’an by Muslim scholars between 2000 and 2017, hundreds of studies in English on the message of the Qur’an and the life of the Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, have appeared.
